Fresh produce exporters in Kenya are calling for the removal of non-tariff barriers on peas and beans as a trade delegation meets to negotiate an Export Partnership Agreement with the United Kingdom. The UK is a significant market for Kenyan fresh produce, and the removal of these barriers could have a significant impact on the industry.
Exporters are urging the UK to adopt Codex Maximum Residue Limits rather than the EU limits, which they had previously adopted. This move would align the UK’s regulations with international standards and could facilitate easier access for Kenyan fresh produce in the UK market.
The Kenyan delegation, led by Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, is accompanied by Agriculture Sector Network Chair Dr Bimal Kantaria, among others. The negotiations are aimed at strengthening trade relations between Kenya and the UK post-Brexit and could potentially open up new opportunities for the Kenyan fresh produce industry.
