In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), has initiated the recruitment process for 4,000 unskilled individuals to become tree nursery attendants as part of the ‘Green Army’ initiative. This initiative aims to support the ambitious 15 billion national tree growing and ecosystem restoration program by facilitating the propagation of seedlings, engaging in tree planting activities, and providing vital extension services.
The Green Army tree nursery attendants will play a crucial role in nurturing and maintaining the growth of seedlings, which are essential for the sustainability of the country’s forest cover. By actively participating in tree planting campaigns and delivering outreach services, these recruits will contribute significantly to the overarching objective of restoring and preserving Kenya’s precious ecosystems.
Speaking on behalf of the ministry, CS Tuya emphasized the importance of conducting a fair and transparent recruitment process for the Green Army. She urged KFS officials to prioritize qualified local applicants, ensuring that the selection process is inclusive and benefits the communities directly involved. The ministry has already commenced advertising the green army jobs, opening up opportunities for enthusiastic and dedicated young individuals to join the noble cause of seedling propagation and tree-growing extension services.
With this recruitment drive, the government demonstrates its commitment to sustainable environmental practices while creating employment opportunities for the youth. By actively involving citizens in ecosystem restoration efforts, Kenya is taking a proactive stance in preserving its natural resources for future generations.
