This year’s International Day of Potato was celebrated at KALRO Oljoroorok in Nyandarua County on May 30th and 31st, 2024. The event was attended by prominent figures including the Deputy Governor of Nyandarua County, Hon. Mathara Mwangi, who emphasized the potato’s vital role in economic development. He was accompanied by Mr. Wachira Kaguongo, CEO of the National Potato Council, and they were welcomed by Mr. Naftali Kanegeni, the KALRO Oljoroorok Centre Director, representing Dr. Eliud Kireger, the Director General of KALRO.
The two-day event, themed “Harvesting Diversity, Feeding the Future,” gathered stakeholders and participants from the potato value chain. It celebrated the potato’s diverse contributions to nutrition, economy, environment, and culture worldwide. The event featured a National Potato Conference and a trade fair aimed at promoting sustainable practices, innovations, and technologies to address challenges in potato production, marketing, and utilization. Additionally, it facilitated the launch of beneficial partnerships aimed at transforming the potato industry.
