Arusha, Tanzania – Over 300 young climate leaders from nearly 100 countries have gathered in Tanzania for the third annual Climate Justice Camp, held from October 8th to 12th. This transformative event brings together youth from the world’s most climate-impacted nations, providing a platform to co-create strategies and advocate for urgent climate action.
As the largest in-person gathering of its kind for young leaders from the Global South, the Climate Justice Camp has previously united nearly 1,000 people across the globe, sparking innovative climate initiatives both locally and internationally. This year’s camp marks the first time the event is being held in Sub-Saharan Africa, following successful editions in Tunisia (2022), Lebanon (2023), and a regional camp in the Caribbean earlier this year.
The camp, co-organized by over 30 partner organizations, features a week-long agenda filled with workshops covering critical climate issues such as energy transition, adaptation and resilience, plastics pollution, conflict and demilitarization, and the intersection of gender and climate. The overarching goal is to foster regional and international networks that can advocate for long-term political change.
“Hosting the Climate Justice Camp in Tanzania this year marks a significant moment for Africa and the broader Global South,” said Cynthia Moyo, Climate and Energy Campaigner at Greenpeace Africa. “Our continent has been at the forefront of climate impacts, yet African communities continue to rise with resilience and leadership. This gathering is an opportunity for African youth to unite, strategize, and build alliances that will shape climate action from the grassroots to global platforms.”
Agustin Maggio, Program Leader of Roots, a lead partner of the camp, emphasized the importance of Sub-Saharan Africa’s participation: “At every previous Climate Justice Camp, we have been struck by the strength of representation from Sub-Saharan Africa. The third edition of the camp in Tanzania holds the promise of being a catalyst for unity and collaboration; empowering participants to build knowledge, share stories, and co-create strategies that will have a lasting impact.”
As the Climate Justice Camp unfolds, it continues to inspire and mobilize the next generation of climate activists, amplifying voices from the Global South and driving the global movement for climate justice.
