In a move to safeguard public and environmental health, the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), a Kenyan government body, has announced a review of several active ingredients used in pest control products. This review, guided by sub-regulation 33 (1) (b) of the Pest Control Products (Registration) Regulations 2024, will assess the safety and efficacy of various insecticides and fungicides currently on the market.
The PCPB is calling on the public to submit comments on the listed active ingredients, including Acrinathrin, Propoxur, Diazinon, Methomyl, Profenofos, and Hexaconazole. These comments, which must be submitted within sixty days, will be crucial in helping the board make informed decisions regarding the continued use of these products.
The Board has outlined specific guidelines for the submission of comments. Comments should focus on the health, environmental, and trade impacts, as well as the effectiveness of these ingredients in controlling pests and diseases. Submissions that are submitted after the deadline or are unrelated to the listed active ingredients will not be considered.
This initiative by the PCPB underscores its commitment to regulating the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, sale, use, and disposal of pest control products, while also mitigating any potential risks to human health, animal health, and the environment. The public’s input will play a vital role in ensuring that only safe and effective pest control products are available in the Kenyan market.
