In a bid to enhance food safety and market access for farmers, the AFA-Food Crops Directorate recently conducted a sensitization forum on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for scheduled food crops in Mombasa County. The forum brought together key stakeholders, including the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), to discuss critical aspects of sustainable agriculture.
The primary objectives of the forum were to:
- Promote safe food production by encouraging farmers to adopt good agricultural practices that ensure food safety.
- Increase consumer awareness of food safety standards, highlighting the importance of healthy and contamination-free produce.
- Improve market access for farmers by aligning agricultural practices with international and local safety regulations.
The initiative underscores the government’s dedication to strengthening Kenya’s agricultural sector through education and awareness programs. By equipping farmers with the knowledge and skills to adhere to GAPs, the forum contributes to enhanced food quality, increased consumer confidence, and broader market opportunities.
Moving forward, the AFA-Food Crops Directorate, in collaboration with KEPHIS, KALRO, and other key partners, aims to expand such sensitization programs to other regions, ensuring that farmers across the country benefit from improved agricultural practices. This commitment to excellence in food production is expected to have a significant impact on Kenya’s food security and economic growth.
