China to increase cargo flights to facilitate export of fresh produce from Kenya

Kenya and China have long maintained a robust bilateral relationship, with China playing a key role in Kenya’s trade and infrastructure development. Despite this close partnership, the trade balance remains notably skewed. Currently, Kenya imports goods worth USD 3.6 billion from China, while exports to China total just USD 300 million. To address this imbalance, both nations are actively exploring ways to increase Kenya’s exports, particularly in agriculture.

In a recent meeting between Kenya’s leadership and the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Guo Haiyan, the two sides discussed measures to enhance trade relations. Ambassador Guo paid a courtesy call to Kenya’s government, where the focus was on expanding Kenya’s export capacity, especially in the agricultural sector. A key component of this plan is the proposal to increase cargo flights to China, which would facilitate the export of fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

Ambassador Guo highlighted Kenya as one of Africa’s most attractive investment destinations, stressing the immense potential for economic collaboration. The discussions also explored avenues for attracting greater Chinese investment in key sectors, including pharmaceuticals and automotive manufacturing, particularly within Kenya’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The meeting was attended by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade & Industry, Lee Kinyanjui, alongside the Ministry’s Principal Secretary, Alfred K’Ombudo. Both Kenyan leaders expressed strong support for initiatives aimed at boosting the country’s exports and improving trade ties with China.

The proposal to increase cargo flights would provide Kenyan farmers with more direct access to China’s growing demand for high-quality agricultural products. By improving the logistics for fresh produce exports, the initiative aims to streamline the export process, reduce costs, and ensure timely delivery of fresh goods to the Chinese market.

This collaboration reflects Kenya’s broader strategy to diversify its export markets and reduce its trade deficit with China. As China remains a vital partner in Kenya’s trade and infrastructure development, enhancing agricultural exports is seen as a key step toward achieving a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship.

With China’s expanding interest in Kenya’s agricultural products and other sectors, the increase in cargo flights will help Kenya capitalize on these opportunities, supporting economic growth and opening up new avenues for trade. Through continued cooperation and strategic investments, Kenya is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in the global market.
