Eastern Africa unites: HoCEA launches strategic plan to boost horticulture exports

The horticulture sector in Eastern Africa holds immense potential, yet fragmented efforts by national associations have long hindered the region’s ability to fully capitalize on export opportunities. This lack of cohesion has resulted in inefficiencies, missed market expansion opportunities, and reduced competitiveness on the global stage.

In a landmark move to address these challenges, the Horticulture Council of Eastern Africa (HoCEA) convened a pivotal three-day forum from 19th to 21st February 2025 at the Protea Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda. Supported by TradeMark Africa under the European Union’s Business Environment and Export Enhancement Programme (BEEEP), the forum brought together national horticulture associations from Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

FPEAK, representing Kenya’s horticulture sector, played a key role in the discussions, which culminated in the development of HoCEA’s Strategic Action Plan for 2025–2027. This plan outlines a clear roadmap to enhance the region’s competitiveness, address critical bottlenecks, and unlock new trade opportunities.

HoCEA’s operationalization marks a transformative step for Eastern Africa’s horticulture industry. By fostering collaboration and a unified approach, the council aims to position the region as a leading global supplier of high-quality fresh produce. This initiative is expected to drive efficiency, improve market access, and strengthen the region’s foothold in international markets.

FPEAK is proud to be at the forefront of this transformative journey. Together, HoCEA and its members are building a stronger, more competitive future for Eastern Africa’s horticulture sector, ensuring that the region’s farmers and exporters reap the full benefits of their hard work and dedication.

This is not just a milestone for the horticulture industry but a testament to the power of regional collaboration in driving economic growth and sustainability.
