Kenya’s avocado industry is poised for another record-breaking year in 2025, with exports projected to reach 135,000 tons, a 6.3% increase from the previous year. This growth solidifies Kenya’s position as Africa’s leading producer and exporter of avocados, with export revenues expected to rise by 11% to $175 million.
The sustained growth is driven by a combination of favorable weather conditions, the expansion of avocado farming into non-traditional regions, and increasing global demand, particularly from Europe and the Middle East. According to the USDA, Kenya’s total avocado harvest is expected to grow by 4% year-on-year to 585,000 tons in 2025, thanks to new plantations in areas where avocado farming was previously uncommon.
Global markets and opportunities
Kenyan avocados continue to dominate international markets, with the Netherlands remaining the largest importer, accounting for 32% of total exports in 2024. The United Arab Emirates followed with 16%, while Spain, France, and Germany imported 13%, 11%, and 7%, respectively. Beyond these traditional markets, emerging demand from China and Iraq is opening new avenues for Kenyan farmers and exporters, further boosting the sector’s growth prospects.
Overcoming logistical challenges
Despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East disrupting shipping routes, Kenya’s fresh produce sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience. At Fruit Logistica 2025 in Berlin, industry leaders reassured buyers of their commitment to maintaining timely and high-quality deliveries.
Chris Flowers, Managing Director of Kakuzi Plc, emphasized ongoing efforts to address logistical challenges. “Kenya is working hard to ensure timely and quality produce reaches the European market,” he stated. Industry stakeholders, including producers, exporters, shipping firms, and government agencies, are collaborating to minimize delays and explore alternative routes, such as shipping through Oman to reach European markets more efficiently.
Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya CEO Okisegere Ojepat highlighted the determination of local farmers and exporters to overcome obstacles. “Despite the challenges, we are committed to ensuring the stability and growth of the avocado sector,” he said.
A bright future for Kenyan avocados
With steady production growth, expanding international demand, and innovative solutions to logistical challenges, Kenya’s avocado industry is on track to maintain its upward trajectory in 2025. The country’s ability to adapt and innovate has strengthened its position as a key player in the global avocado market, offering immense opportunities for farmers, exporters, and the economy at large.
As Kenya continues to capitalize on its competitive edge, the avocado sector is set to play a pivotal role in driving agricultural exports and economic growth, further cementing the country’s reputation as a leading supplier of high-quality avocados worldwide.
