The African Phytosanitary Programme (APP) refresher training workshop is currently underway at the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) Headquarters, bringing together plant health professionals from across Africa.
This week-long training, spearheaded by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat and the African Union Commission on Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), aims to enhance the continent’s capacity to manage plant health threats effectively.
The workshop will focus on critical aspects of pest monitoring and detection information management. By equipping plant health professionals with cutting-edge knowledge and techniques, the programme seeks to bolster Africa’s ability to prevent, detect, and manage the devastating impacts of plant pests on agriculture and food security.
Participants will engage in training sessions that emphasize collaboration, resource leveraging, and knowledge sharing. These efforts are essential for building resilient phytosanitary systems capable of safeguarding Africa’s agricultural sector, which is vital for economic growth and food security.
This initiative underscores the importance of regional cooperation and capacity-building in addressing plant health challenges, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable agricultural development and environmental conservation.
The training marks a significant step toward strengthening Africa’s phytosanitary systems and ensuring the continent’s readiness to combat plant pests that threaten crops and livelihoods.
