October 14, 2013. MFarm limited, an award winning software solutions and agribusiness company has received a Ksh 20 million grant from M-Pesa Foundation to scale up its operations.
MFarm’s main product is a mobile app and online marketplace that enables smallholder farmers in rural Kenya to access market information. This enables them to make informed decisions on where and how to sell their farm produce. The app also allows multiple farmers to sell collectively to attract larger buyers.
MFarm plans to use these new funds to scale its network of agents across Kenya. “We are thrilled to have gained the funds we need to continue to grow the business. Now, we will be able to help even more farmers beyond the over 8,000 already using our platform, and improve their standard of living.” said Linda Kwamboka, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of M-Farm.
Nakuru County is amongst the counties where farmers will benefit from MFarm’s expansion of the agent network. MFarm is calling out to farmer groups who are planting export quality garden peas and potatoes in this county.
This partnership is particularly interesting, because both M-Pesa and M-Farm rely on an agency model and there is a lot to be learnt from Safaricom, who have successfully touched millions of lives through the agency model.
