Farmers in Makueni County are set to benefit from a transformative agricultural initiative as Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. unveiled two innovative programs: the Agripreneur Model and the County Crop Protection Unit. The launch, held on Thursday, marked a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to modernize farming practices and boost agricultural productivity.
A total of 210 agripreneurs and crop protection specialists were commissioned during the event, signaling the start of a new era in Makueni’s agricultural landscape. The Agripreneur Model is designed to provide farmers with advanced extension and advisory services, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to enhance productivity, improve food security, and increase their incomes.
Simultaneously, the County Crop Protection Unit was established to tackle the persistent challenges of pests and crop diseases. Comprising trained Spray Service Providers (SSPs), the unit will ensure the safe and effective use of pest control measures, safeguarding both the environment and the quality of agricultural produce.
Governor Kilonzo emphasized the critical role of agriculture in the county’s development during his address. “Agriculture is the backbone of our community. It is not just about food; it is about our health, our economy, and our future. These initiatives are designed to empower our farmers and secure their livelihoods,” he said.
The programs will focus on high-value crops such as mangoes, avocados, citrus fruits, tomatoes, green grams, and pigeon peas, as well as livestock sectors like dairy and poultry farming. Industrial crops, including coffee, macadamia, sunflower, and cotton, will also receive attention, ensuring a diversified and resilient agricultural sector.
In a move to further support farmers, the governor announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art pack house in Makueni. This facility will meet international export standards, enabling local farmers to access global markets and maximize their profits.
The launch event saw the presence of key county officials, including County Secretary Dr. Justin Kyambi, Agriculture CECM Joyce Mutua, and County Assembly Agriculture Committee Chairperson Hon. Francis Mutuku, among others. Their participation underscored the county’s unified commitment to driving agricultural innovation and economic growth.
These initiatives reflect Makueni County’s dedication to transforming its agricultural sector, ensuring that farmers are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. By prioritizing sustainability, productivity, and market access, the county is paving the way for a brighter future for its farming community.
