The Kenyan government has committed KSh 349 billion towards enhancing irrigation infrastructure in Embu County, according to Principal Secretary for Irrigation, Gitonga Kimotho. This substantial investment is part of the government’s strategy to secure food security and uplift the agricultural sector in the region.
Speaking during a tour of the ongoing projects, PS Kimotho emphasized the importance of these initiatives in transforming agriculture in Embu. The irrigation schemes, once fully operational, are expected to significantly increase crop yields and provide a reliable water supply to local farmers, enabling them to diversify their agricultural activities.
The investment covers the development of large-scale irrigation systems, modern water storage facilities, and the rehabilitation of existing irrigation infrastructure. These projects align with the government’s broader agricultural policy to increase productivity, enhance food security, and improve livelihoods for rural communities.
The PS highlighted that these projects would also create employment opportunities, reduce dependency on rain-fed agriculture, and contribute to the overall economic growth of Embu County. Local farmers have expressed optimism about the positive impact these developments will have on their farming practices and livelihoods.
